Decorate your garden furniture

Use a simple decoupage technique to transform a wooden table and chairs into elegant outdoor furniture.

You will need

  • Untreated pine table (table top measuring 700 x 700 x 20mm) and chairs, available from furniture shops or the hardware section of large chain stores
  • Three 600 x 45 x 5mm pine planks
  • 6 x 20mm brass screws and screwdriver
  • 500 x 20mm piece of OSB board (coarse, weather resistant board available from timber merchants)
  • White PVA paint and paintbrush
  • Colour wash in mocha
  • Paper serviettes with a design of your choice
  • Scissors
  • Spray glue
  • Decoupage outdoor sealant
  • One tin all-in-one wood stain and sealer
  • fine steel wool

    To make

    1. Take the table to a timber merchant and have a 500 x 500mm square cut into the centre of the table top, leaving a 200mm-wide border right round.

    2. Turn the table upside down so that it rests on the top and screw the three planks to the bottom of the table top about 120mm apart. This serves as a base for the loose OSB board that fits into the hole.

    3. Apply a coat of white PVA to the OSB board, leave it to dry and rinse the brush.

Note You can rinse the brushes under running water, because all the paint products are water based.

    4. Apply one coat of colour wash with an old cloth or sponge and leave to dry.

    5. Cut out the design from the serviette (we chose roses) and remove the extra layer of paper. Arrange the pattern on the board, mark the positions of the designs, then remove them.

    6. Spray glue on the surface of the board and attach the pieces of paper. Gently smooth out the paper to remove air bubbles.

    7. Paint the entire board with six to eight layers of decoupage outdoor sealant (we used Decoupage Out door Podge). Allow each layer to dry before you apply the next. Rinse the brush.

    8. Paint the rest of the table (the 200mm edge and table legs) with three coats of all-in-one wood tint and sealant (we used Wonda Seal). Allow each layer to dry then gently sand with steel wool before applying the next coat. Rinse the brush.

    9. Repeat the steps to decorate the backs of the chairs.

    Good idea
You do not always have to cut out the design from the serviette. If you like the whole design, you can past it on as is.
