Women often come in for advice about depression, anxiety and stress says pharmacist Nel-Marie Swart.
"Stress, depression and anxiety are common problems, especially among women," says Swart.
"They're juggling their family and their career and it just gets too much for them."
Treatment
Swart says that before offering advice she tries to find out why they are stressed, rather than simply treating the symptoms.
"I also ask if they exercise. I don't mean gyming, but something active that will help them get rid of their frustrations - something like kick-boxing is great.
"Exercise clears your mind and helps getting your circulation going. It makes you feel healthy."
She also advises women to take vitamin supplements, specifically vitamin B and folic acid, as well as something herbal "to take the edge off. If that doesn't work, then I advise them to see their doctor."
Swart says vitamin B is great stress. "It helps the nervous system, feeds the neurons and it's also an energy booster. It makes you feel good, but its not like caffeine that hypes you up and then you crash.
"Folic acid is very important because it nourishes the cells; it's cell food, especially for the brain."
She says that although most good multivitamins contain folic acid and vitamin B, if you're stressed you may need to take additional vitamin B and folic acid.
