7 Weeks
Your baby's liver has started to function. This is important because it
takes over the job of supplying the embryo's blood cells that, until now,
were supplied by the yolk sac. Your baby's looking less like an alien as the
cells between the ridges of the fingers and toes start to die off.
Big things are happening at the moment. You may have noticed that you're
breathing faster and your heart rate has increased? This is because
everything has to work harder to facilitate your baby's rapid growth at this
time. Even your blood volume begins to rise, and your metabolism has sped
up. If you have dizzy spells, it's usually due to a drop in blood sugar
levels.
Folic acid is vital to help you prevent neural tube defects in your baby.
You will need 0.4mg every day until week 12 of your pregnancy. Start a
weekly journal and describe your feelings and how you broke this special
news to your partner, family and friends. Mark my words, this journal is
going to give you and your family great joy, some good laughs and a tear or
two in the years that lie ahead!
She'll start to fall asleep on the couch while watching television,
something you may have been criticised for. Avoid the temptation to make
snide comments. Buy her herbal teas, decaffeinated coffee and fruit juices.
If she feels that you're on her side through the more difficult stages,
you'll be her hero for life.
