 Your growing baby
By now you've probably seen your baby on a scan. It might look more like a grain of rice than your very own baby, but for the first time your baby is starting to resemble a figure and not just a clump of cells. As small as this figure is, there are already spots where the eyes and ears are beginning to form and tiny bumps where the arms and legs will appear.
 About your body
You're at the end of your first month. How are you feeling? We know how tired you must be, and the tiredness you feel when you're pregnant is unlike anything you've ever experienced. This is because of the pregnancy hormones and because your baby is going through the most critical developmental stage. Give yourself a chance to adapt to all the changes that your body is going through. Focus on the fact that your baby is growing healthily inside you. And take heart; this is a passing stage in your pregnancy. By your second trimester you'll be feeling much more energised.
 Your to do list
You may go to your regular gynaecologist or you may want to see a midwife throughout your pregnancy ? or both. Find someone you feel comfortable with; someone who shares your idea of what pregnancy and birth should be. You're free to change from one caregiver to another until you are happy. At your first checkup, your caregiver will take a thorough medical and family history for any past illnesses that could affect your pregnancy. A blood test will be done to establish your blood group, whether you've had all the necessary immunisations and to test for anaemia (you may need an iron supplement). Your blood pressure is checked so that any changes during pregnancy can be picked up. Your weight will be recorded to check for normal weight gain over the next few months. You may have a scan. Ask questions about the tests you should be having and whether they are necessary. Some are a matter of choice.
 Tips for dad
Don't be afraid to show your excitement. Your partner will need loads of support while getting used to the idea of bringing a baby into the world. Give her extra attention and don't forget to tell her that she's beautiful!
