"Hunger is causing a crisis in our country. About 2,5 million children will not eat today. This crisis can only be addressed through the joint efforts of government, religious and community organisations, corporations, and of course, you, the consumer. This is our call for everyone to unite against hunger."
- Linda Bam, Unite Against Hunger

Stunted growth, learning difficulties, mental retardation and developmental problems are just some of the effects hunger has on millions of children throughout the country.

If we’re serious about fighting hunger, a huge, sustained effort from all sectors of society is essential.

Prompted by this, Tiger Brands, the company behind the well-loved brands featured in this magazine, formed Unite Against Hunger – an independent not-for-profit entity under which all South Africans, NGOs and businesses can join the fight.

Unite Against Hunger has become one of the country’s most recognisable initiatives for addressing issues of national food security, and provides much-needed support to over 86 000 people every month.

The organisation has several implementation partners, including The African Children’s Feeding Scheme (ACFS), Heartbeat and Hope International – all of which feed and look after orphaned and vulnerable children.

The Unite Against Hunger/ PLATES campaign aims to encourage all South Africans to participate in fundraising for 2006.

A number of local celebs and personalities (some of them featured on the pages that follow) have already added their weight to the initiative.
