Crazy Monkey – Straight Outta Benoni

Monkey-mania is everywhere – this endeavour has indeed captured the imagination of the entire country, young and old.

John Langford, 5FM's station manager, exclaimed: "Crazy Monkey is a movie for the people, by the people – viva local production, viva!"

The premiere of the Crazy Monkey movie, Straight Outta Benoni, was out of this world. With over 1500 guests, this packed event at Ster-Kinekor East Rand Mall had to be the most extraordinary night out in years, and certainly a first for South Africa: a red carpet premiere that had Hollywood written all over it.

The venue was filled with 5FM personalities, the cast from the movie, the musicians (including local rock act The Finkelstiens) who made up the soundtrack, TV personalities, celebrities, business leaders and media. Francois Pienaar was there. And so was Barry Ronge, Jenny Crwys-Williams, Heinz Winkler, Kurt Darren, David Kau, Tshepo Mogale, Tamara Dey, and the list goes on.

The cast from the film which includes Brendan Jack, Gavin Williams, Tanit Phoenix, Colin Moss, Kagiso Lediga, John Vlismas, Danny K, Louw Venter, Lee-Ann Liebenberg were all there.

The Crazy Monkey movie has been a long collaborative process with 5FM, which has seen an unprecedented marketing campaign hitting South Africa, and the results have been impressive. Everyone is hoping that their efforts lead to new box office records being broken, when the movie is released at cinemas nationwide on 30 September.

"For the first time, South Africa has a cool motion picture aimed mainly at the youth market – a film that makes people laugh; a movie with characters that are lovable and charming.

The guests at the premiere commented on the progress our country has made with a volume of work like this. It is just good, clean fun – no political or other agendas. Just hip, cutting-edge, youth-orientated entertainment.
