This semi-desert landscape is the main sheep-farming region in South Africa and it is the indigenous plants that produce the fragrant taste of Karoo lamb that has the reputation of being the best in South Africa.
WORTH A VISIT
The Laird's Arms Pub next to the Lord Milner Hotel in Matjiesfontein, two hours' drive north of Cape Town, is worth a visit and not only for its famous Karoo lamb curry. The Victorian village is also a must-see. For information on Matjiesfontein
Karoo National Park, on the N1 near Beaufort West, offers a sight of the unusual Karoo landscape and, when you visit the restaurant, you can enjoy succulent Karoo lamb.
Kambro Farmstall, on the N12 between Three Sisters and Kimberley, is the perfect place to do your holiday meat shopping. Buy stuffed springbok shoulder and leg, rolled Karoo lamb rib, braai chops and boerewors.
The Kambro restaurant has sumptuous Karoo specialities. There is a large farm dam in which the kids can cool off in summer and there are farm animals close by. Accommodation is also on offer.
