The Salmon of Doubt is hilarious – with laugh-out-loud moments – and it's thought-provoking. Adams had strong opinions, and was never afraid of voicing them. And he had an acute sense of the ridiculous and absurd in our society. There are enjoyable pieces on computers, atheism, dogs, manta rays, and climbing Kilimanjaro in a rhino suit, among others.
The incomplete novel, the third book in the Dirk Gently Holistic Detective Agency series, gives a glimpse of what could have been a brilliant addition to the comic science fiction genre, a genre that suits Adams' quirky ideas and unique way with words. As Stephen Fry says in the introduction to this book: 'There are those who write from time to time and do it well, and then there are Writers. Douglas Adams… was born, grew up, and remained a Writer to his too-early dying day.'
