University of Witwatersrand researchers have announced that people had far healthier feet before shoes were invented.
In The Foot journal, study leaders explain that early human populations that wore no shoes had fewer foot pathologies than modern groups who do wear shoes. The research involved more than 180 modern humans from Sotho, Zulu and European population groups and human skeletons that were more than 2 000 years old.
Scarily, the study specifically highlighted the damage done by high-heeled shoes to female feet.
If ever you needed a reason to toss those stilettos and curl your toes around blades of grass, this is it. Go ahead, give your tootsies the breathing space they deserve.
