Parenting after death of father

Question

I am a 34 year old mother of 2 children aged 11 and 7. My husband passed away 6 and a half years ago. It has been a major adjustment to get back on track. I am dating presently and feel comfortable as a single parent. However, my children are a major concern. My daughter(11) is extremely introverted and does not adjust well to new situations. I have had her in therapy for 2 years after her father's death. I would like to help her to be well adjusted and get the maximum benefit from all oppertunities presented. It becomes difficult with her refusal to participate or even attempt anything. My son (7) is an extrovert but has taken to mimmicking my behavour. He is even playing with fashion dolls. I try not to lable him or make him feel uncomfortable with his choices but even if I try to introduce more "male dominant"toys he is just not interested. He appears, speaks and most mannerism appear male. I am concerned and feel that my parenting skills require major work. Their school grades are excellent. My mother feels that I am trying to over compensate and that the children who have above average intelligence are manipulating me to get maximum attention. My gut feeling is tha the problem is the abscence of a male influence. I am not keen to share my children with my boyfriend and keep the two seperate. Note sure of "rocking" the little ones world.

Answer

BALANCE
This must have been a huge shock and trauma, and your daughter was old enough to remember him well. Maybe a change in therapy style, as well as a constitutional homeopathic remedy? I can refer you to specific child therapists, also to a great homeopath with good track record in these things. he is in Rosebank, Dr Paul Booyse, 084 885 0167
