Teaching disobedience

Sam wants to know if kids should be taught to take a political or moral stand?

Hey, fatso!

Obesity is SA's "elephant in the room". Feel free to take that literally, says channel24's pop culture columnist.

Beating my best

According to the bible "Only the wicked run when not being chased..." I wonder what that says about those of us who run for fun. And not just for fun, but to beat a specific time.

It was the Milkwood half-marathon (21.1km) on Sunday and I wanted to come in under 2 hours, my best being 2 hours and 4 minutes, so I knew I'd actually have to take this race seriously.

My friend Shaun agreed to run with me. I thought he'd just run part of the way and then go on ahead, being a stronger runner than I am, but he stuck with me. He encouraged me all the way, even to a sprint finish at the end!

Flying over the finish line at 1 hour and 53 minutes I was beaming from ear to ear, wanting to hug everyone in sight (which I refrained from doing, being a little sweaty) to be handed a tree instead of a medal – a fabulous gesture and one I wish they'd adopt at more races.

Now I'm not going to lie, I was sore for the rest of the day (and the next) but to go into something with a goal and actually achieve it really puts you on a high. I had never set goals with running to begin with because I didn't want to put any unnecessary pressure on myself. Silly, I know, since it is the pressure you need to actually excel.

But I have to send a big thanks to my friend Shaun for the help and motivation. I don't think I would have cracked it without him.

I'm running a full marathon on Saturday (42.2km) and I want to finish under 4 hours and 20 minutes, lets hope with this in mind I push myself that extra mile (or km in this case).
