Yacht race empowers women

South Africa's women sailors are given an opportunity to take part in the only race of its kind in Africa at the Royal Cape Yacht Club on Sunday 13 April.

Only female skippers and crews are allowed to enter the annual Lion of Africa’s Yacht Race; which is a fairly familiar concept internationally but in its sixth year in South Africa, this has become a fixture on the local sailing scene. If necessary, the yacht owner or their representative (even if it’s a man) will be allowed on the boats to observe only.

"The race caters for both serious and recreational sailors. The skippers can enter their yachts in either a spinnaker or non-spinnaker class and boats for out of town teams are also most welcome." says Viqui Stevenson, Race Co-ordinator. "Instead of traditional silverware trophies, the ladies compete for beautiful sandstone sculptures of women."

The race is a wonderful opportunity for South Africa's women sailors to showcase their talents as well as be part of an event that donates a portion of the sponsorship monies to charity. This year, there are an expected fifteen boats entering the race, with each crew consisting of between five and eight women.

Fred Robertson, Chairman of Lion of Africa says: "We are proud to be involved in this annual ladies yacht race as we believe it's a vehicle to help South African women fulfil their dreams and aspirations."

Lion of Africa has a specialist marine division that provides specialised covers that are devised to suit individual needs for their particular marine covers including, pleasure craft, cargo insurance, goods in transit, project insurance as well as stock throughput covers.

Venue:
The race will take place in Table Bay, starting at 14h30 lasting just over an hour – depending on the wind conditions.

Entrance:
R50 per boat (Entries can be made up until the day before the race.)
