Thanks, coach!

National women's hockey striker, Tsoanelo Pholo, speaks about her part in developing young talent on the hockey field.

Tsoanelo Pholo, who turns 25 in December, is a rolemodel who understands the importance of transferring skills. This super-fit athlete has recently been appointed Gauteng's under-16 provincial hockey coach, she coaches hockey at Bryanston High School, and is a member of the coaching staff at Jo'burg's School of Excellence, run by former national hockey captain, Lindsay Carlisle.

Tsoanelo, who started coaching in 2003, says: "It's great, especially my appointment as under-16 provincial coach, which is quite a big achievement for me. When I went to the trials with the kids, I saw the girls I had coached two or three years ago, and seeing the progress that they've made, it's really amazing to know that I have been a part of their development!

"I can include this appointment [as provincial under-16 coach] on my résumé, and who knows, perhaps when I'm done playing internationally, I'd like to be involved in other provincial coaching – maybe the under-21s or even coach a premier league team," explains Tsoanelo.

With her national hockey commitments and various coaching roles, fitness has become a firm part of Tsoanelo's life, and she aims to train at least three times a day. "I gym in the mornings and if I am not coaching in the afternoons, I do more fitness training. My final training session is in the evenings.

That's why I chose to work at the school. When I finish around 5pm, I can do my own training and club practices after work."

In August, Tsoanelo definitely celebrated the successes of women in sport. "I will be celebrating that we have one more year to go to Beijing 2008. The Olympics are the highlight of our next 20 months. It's crunch time; we need to knuckle down and start working towards results now."
