Nose problems getting you down? Take a look at what the ENT specialist says.

Problems tend to be age specific, says ENT specialist Dr Peter Friedland, although one of the commonest is allergic rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis can be seasonal or last all year. It is an inflammation of the membrane lining the nose.

Symptoms include a blocked or runny nose, squeezing and red, watery eyes. The condition is caused by an allergen, which is either breathed in or ingested.

The most common inhaled allergens are pollen, grass and dust mites (almost 30% of people with allergic rhinits are allergic to dust mites, as are one in five asthma sufferers). Ingested allergins include dairy and wheat products.

Treatment

It's important to identify the specific allergen. Dr Friedland says a patient is usually initially tested for only the most common allergens.

He also asks them to keep a diary of what they eat and what and who they are in contact with. "The best approach is prevention," he says and suggests vacuuming the house (including mattresses) regularly to get rid of dust mites, using a mattress cover and reducing clutter that attracts dust.

Topical treatment involves first washing out the nose with saline or a mixture of bicarbonate of soda and water.

A cortisone-based nasal spray is the main conventional treatment, which, Dr Friedland stresses, contains only a microdose of cortisone, with no long-term or side effects.

"You could also take an antihistamine, ideally one that is not sedatory", says Dr Friedland.
