Reflexology explained

Bogged down by ailments? Reflexology could be the key to your wellbeing.

Reflexology is a form of massage therapy that eases a variety of ailments and brings about a sense of wellbeing by stimulating the pressure points on the soles of the feet. It was used by healers in ancient Greece, China and Egypt and revived by Dr William Fitzgerald in 1917. He divided the body into 10 zones, each zone being reflected on the soles of the feet. His work was continued by Eunice Ingham in the 1930's, who created the first body chart showing the different areas on the soles of the feet that correlate to the body.

How does it work?
Reflexology regards the feet as mirrors of the body, the left foot representing the left side and the right foot the right side of the body. Different parts of the sole connect via the flow of energy along the meridian or energy lines to various parts of the body. For example, the big toe connects to the head and brain. During a massage, the thousands of nerve endings on the feet are activated, releasing blocked energies in the body. Reflexology points are also found on the hands and ears.

The benefits of Reflexology
Reflexology is particularly effective in treating conditions such as stress, fatigue, headaches, poor circulation, digestive problems and respiratory disorders, but may also be helpful in clearing energy blocks that relate to asthma, irritable bowel syndrome and the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and arthritis.

What to expect during a consultation
During the first consultation, the reflexologist takes down a comprehensive case history of the client, and some even begin with a relaxing foot spa. Thereafter the practitioner works by massaging the feet on the various reflex points. Each session lasts about 30 to 45 minutes and the best results are achieved through a series of weekly treatments.
