Can hormones help with weight loss?
Losing weight is an uphill battle for many women, however shedding those extra kilos is so much easier if you are prepared for it.

A large part of this preparation is educating yourself on how your body works and exactly why it holds on to the extra weight.

"Every year, thousands of women go on diet plans to lose weight, only to be disappointed by the results, and without ever realising exactly why they are unable to lose the weight," says Paula Galvão, weight loss expert and founder of the Eden Life Weight Loss Clinic.

Before embarking on any weight loss plan, it is important to adopt a positive attitude and be prepared to make the necessary lifestyle changes.

To maximise your weight loss attempts, and to achieve long term success, Galvão shares some of her tips:

Eat lots of vegetables, because they help you lose weight.
Leptin levels are increased when you consume a diet rich in plant-based foods.

Choose low-fat foods over fat-free foods.
Low-fat foods not only boost leptin levels, they also enhance the effectiveness of this hormone, helping it to attach to cells and improve fat burning. Your brain registers the presence of fat, regardless of how small the quantities are, and lets your body think it is full.

Never skip meals to compensate for "cheating".
Whenever you skip meals the stomach releases ghrelin – the hormone which is responsible for triggering a voracious appetite. When ghrelin levels are high, leptin levels decrease, which means that not only do you eat more, but you burn less.

Sleep yourself satisfied.
Sleep deprivation causes an increase in cortisol production, which translates into additional water retention, a bigger appetite and a decreased ability to lose weight.

Hide those snacks.
Simply seeing food you enjoy can cause a frenzy of activity called the orbitofrontal cortex, which is linked to feelings of hunger.

"By adopting new behaviours which eliminate bad lifestyle habits, you definitely improve your chances of losing weight," says Galvão.
