"Being organised is not about being tidy. It is about knowing where to find stuff. Secondly, it is a process. It has taken a long time to build up the clutter and it will take a while to sort through it. Being organised is a behaviour we can learn, not something we're born with."
Get going in 8 steps
1. Write down your goal and use it as a motivation. Set yourself some sort of reward at the end, such as a manicure.
2. Visualise how you want a particular room to look. Start with the end in mind.
3. Invest in storage containers that you like, because the chances are better that you will use them.
4. Follow your natural rhythm. If you throw your towel on the bedroom floor, then that is where you need a hook for it.
5. Address each area as an individual project.
6. Decide what is working and what is not working.
7. Start with what you can see.
8. Only keep what you use and love.
Sort out the linen
Do not use your linen cupboard to store excess junk, especially if you have limited space.
But I can't throw it away
Ask yourself: Why am I holding on to these things? Do I need them? Do I love them? Do they reflect who I am?
If you are not ready to get rid of something immediately, pack it in a box with a label and put it away. If you have not used anything from that box for more than a year, consider giving it to charity. Giving something away can be a mental tool. It is difficult to get rid of things but, if you can think of the nature of the universe, it is constantly moving and changing. If you no longer need, want or love something, give it to someone else to use and enjoy.
It's not clutter, it's art
Need some inspiration to deal with the kid's artwork? Either display it on a pin board in the kitchen, or keep it together in a cardboard file. At the end of each year, sort through the collection with your children. Let them choose special items to put in your memory box and make a collage of the others. Frame them and put them up in their rooms. You can also laminate them and use them as placemats or give them as presents to grandparents.
Consider taking photos of your children with bulky craft projects and then throw the projects away. Frame the photos for their rooms. If there are items they want to keep, put them in their memory boxes.
