Beat the blues with these six easy steps that are guaranteed to lift your spirits:

1. Change your outlook
Do you see only the dark side of things? Rather try to see the positive side of every situation. If you are denied promotion at work, it could be the incentive to work harder, or it could be the push you need to look for other work.

2. See the solutions to problems
as well as the problems themselves. Instead of sobbing in a miserable heap about all the problems in your life, make a list of what bothers you and how you plan to solve them.

3. Look at what you have accomplished
Make a list at the end of each day of the things you did finish and congratulate yourself on that. Do you keep wistfully sighing that you've never been to Paris or Apart from making a plan to do it, why not daydream about all the fun things you have done already?

4. Do something special for yourself
Put away R50 each month and make a list of the things you'd like but would not get yourself. When you have enough money for one item, splash out on a gift for yourself.

5. Pay other people a compliment
Flattery makes the world (and people's heads) turn.

6. Stay detached when things don't go as planned
It will help you stay calm and in control of your feelings. Don't confuse this with not caring. All you are doing is not letting things get to you.
