Nanomaterials are already being used in many products we are familiar with today – baby wipes, tennis balls, paint, sunscreens and cosmetics. Cosmetics giant L'Oréal is leading the way in the multi-trillion-dollar cosmetics industry by devoting much of its £350 million research budget to cosmetics using Nanotechnology.
L'Oréal recently launched nanotech products including anti-wrinkle creams that are said to absorb deeper into the skin because of the minuscule size of their particles. However, much controversy surrounds this technology, which some have hailed as a modern miracle and others as a time bomb waiting to explode.
The thing is this: nanoscale materials are miniscule – the head of a pin is about 1 million nano metres across – get the picture? These materials are highly soluble and because of their size they can easily cross into the human bloodstream when inhaled, swallowed or applied to the skin.
Once inside the body they move easily into tissue and organs, including the brain. "Very little is known about the interaction of nanoscale particles and the skin," says the Food and Drug Administration in the United States.
On a positive level nanotechnology is being used to improve the quality of water, develop alternative energy sources and there's much excitement around its uses in the area of disease diagnosis and treatment.
