Red hot love

Belle's unconscious and Shawn knows she'll die if they stay outside so he carries her to a nearby barn. Thanks to Bo and Hope's stories he knows the best way to stave off hypothermia is to strip down and bundle up in a blanket with another naked person to share body heat – in this case, with Belle.

And man, do things get hot! As Belle and Shawn snuggle together, their secret dreams take over and cross into the real world, where they start to make love. But...

Burning love
Well, is there ever not a 'but' with this star-crossed couple? During the night a stray spark from the wood burning stove in the barn sets fire to their love nest. Luckily Shawn wakes up in time to rescue Belle from the inferno and staggers outside with her wrapped in a blanket before collapsing. "It certainly wasn't ideal for Shawn and Belle's first time, but was certainly typical of a soapie," Martha Madison (Belle) joked in her Popgurls interview.

"I remember reading it and thinking, 'What? They do it but they don't know they do it?' It was funny. The more exciting part was that the whole barn was on fire at one point. I was like, 'What do you mean I can't open my eyes? The haystack is on fire five feet from me!' After we had sleep sex, we were passed out and they lit the whole set on fire. And I wasn't allowed to open my eyes. I had to trust Jason to pick me up and run me under a burning beam that fell about three feet from me. That, for me, was terrifying. Thank God Jason's strong!"

Mimi knows the truth
The fire attracts a lot of attention so they don't die out in the snow. Instead they're rushed to hospital where they lie side by side in the emergency room. While the doctors bustle round them, they share an out-of-body experience. Meanwhile Mimi chats to a paramedic and finds out that the paramedics came across them naked and wrapped round each other and, as he tells her, "It looked like they were... well, you know." So she suspects it wasn't entirely a survival tactic.

Shawn's so confused
Shawn and Belle wake confused and disoriented and slowly start to remember bits and pieces from their night of passion. But Shawn has taken a lot of blows to the head lately and he's been drugged and manipulated, so he has no idea whether he's remembering things correctly. He's overwhelmed by his feelings of love for Belle and staggers out of his bed to go speak to her. Belle doesn't remember things as clearly as he does, though, and believes what she experienced was a dream and that the man she'd imagined making love to was Philip.

Belle tells Philip that they shouldn't waste another minute because she's realised that she truly loves him: "I realised that I had been dreaming about making love to the most incredible man. And I know the man I dreamt about was you." Shawn overhears them and dismisses his memories as a hallucination.

Maybe, maybe... nope
Lexie tells Shawn that hypothermia and smoke inhalation can cause blackouts, hallucinations and amnesia but he tells his mum, "It just felt so right. It was like the way it was back in the day when the two of us were still in love. I was just holding her in my arms, and... it was like nothing else in this world existed. It just felt so real." Hope comes to the rescue and convinces him to fight for Belle anyway, since his feelings for her are so strong.

But when Shawn and Belle talk about what happened in the barn, neither is willing to admit they had naughty dreams and Belle ruins everything by telling Shawn she dreamed she was in bed with Philip. And that's the end of that! "We still have the same story where one day it feels like we're making progress and the next day it feels like we're taking two steps back," a frustrated Jason Cook (Shawn) told daysofourlives.com.

Just one night of love but it's going to have huge consequences.
