I am sure many of you are thinking, "Mother’s Day is just another way for Cardies and Hallmark to up their profits." But no matter what your sentiment, chances are you also have a mother who will be expecting some love and pampering…
By the way, the history books show Mother’s Day has been around much longer than Cardies and Hallmark. People have been celebrating similar events since ancient Greece; where they honoured Rhea, the mother of gods and goddesses, with a spring feast.
It was not until the beginning of the 1900s Mother’s Day as we know it came about. In memory of her deceased mother Anna M. Jarvis from West Virginia and her friends began a letter-writing campaign to try and establish an annual Mother’s Day holiday. Her mission: to create a day where kids can celebrate their mothers, thank them and show respect for their efforts.
In 1910 the first Mother’s Day proclamation was issued. A year later Mexico, Canada, China, Japan, South America and Africa were also celebrating Mother’s Day.
Today, it has become a global phenomenon and mothers all over the globe receive special attention on the second Sunday of May.
What to get your Mom
If you truly love her, don’t give her household items, garden tools or anything you can clean with.
In a poll on the website, Everything Mother's Day, moms rated the following as the gifts they most desired:
Moms around the world also agree one of the most special gifts is to receive a personal letter. So, write to her – nothing says more than a loving letter with a few reasons why she is special.
If she lives far away, send her an e-card and visit Kalahari.net to get her a special gift which can be delivered to her address. You can also send her a voucher and she can choose her own gift off the website for delivery.
Then of course you could buy her a subscription to her favourite magazine. Online Subscriptions website subscribe24.co.za has a host of great special offers on their top titles – it's the gift that, as they rightly say, keeps on giving!
No matter what you do, remember it is all about the attitude.
