Small town family

Swapping the big city for a smaller town is one of the best moves we have made so far.

Baby wants, baby gets

Stupid girls
It’s school holidays, is your daughter getting pregnant?

Now look, we all know that Americans have a lot of time on their hands. But seriously, could the girls of Gloucester High School really not have started a knitting circle or something? Alas, no, 17 of these flowers of American youth are pregnant, supposedly because of a pact made so they could share this experience with each other.

Could this happen here? I fear it easily could, what with the many repeats on SABC daytime television, and a lack of facilities for teens to do something constructive with their two weeks of winter holidays. South African teenagers have already discovered the entertainment value of sex. There may be a movement towards a new abstinence in certain religious circles, yet many are ruled by their hormones. Still, sex is one thing, and pregnancy something else all together. Some teenagers make good parents, but raising children is hard enough without the added challenge of still being at school.

I have never wanted to believe the myth that South African teenagers are deliberately falling pregnant to be able to sign up for the child grant. This seems like a cynicism born of the older generation’s worldview. We must face some hard facts, though. Despite the best efforts of Life Orientation teachers across the land, the kids have not got the abstinence message, or the condomise one.

According to the MRC’s South African National Youth Risk Behaviour Survey (2002), 19,1% of sexually active female high school learners has been pregnant. Financial need and that attractive grant may play a part for some, but foolishness surely also has a major role to play. In Limpopo, which according to the MRC’s survey has the highest pregnancy levels among high school learners (29,8%), only 11% of the high school males surveyed said they had made anyone pregnant. So either the province of the rising sun is home to a small bunch of very virile young baby machines, or the baby daddies in many of these cases are not in high school.

Cue the outrageous piece of information that one of the “fathers” in the Gloucester pregnancy pact was a 24-year-old homeless man. Desperate not to be left out of the group’s latest fad, this young girl collected a donation from the nearest viable-looking male human.

Could it be that the world over, teenage girls are in a stupid phase? And could it be that teenage boys – and passing men -- just want to get their rocks off and damn the consequences? With genetic imperatives like those, I fear the next generation might be worse off, and stupider than ever.

Are teen pregnancies a problem? Or is it just kids doing what comes naturally?

From a male perspective, I'm available to seal any future pacts of this kind...! On a serious note, it is short sighted, and makes it seem 'ok' to become pregnant whilst in school. Hope the media in the States slammed this event.

I disagree with the "teenage girls are in a stupid phase?" question/statement.. I'd rather say, "Of course! They're teenagers! We were all there once" ...but I'd rather put the actual problem closer to home, and change the title of this article to "Stupid Parents." So much can be prevented if the upbringing is better at home - if parents could be bothered with reading a bit about what's going on in the modern teens psyche, and learn about the pressures of todays society on their kids, they'll be one step closer to properly communicating with their kids about these things, and generally have a better relationship with their teens. So, how about adding a little solution to the problems you write about?

My 17yr old sister in boarding school was suspended for being found in the boys living quarters sleeping with a boy (her teacher told me this). I'm not over the shock. It's stupidity, being bored and being misinformed. You can always have sex, you're not missing out on anything when you wait until older. I started when I was 22 and I'm now 27, independent with no kid.

Yip, the world continues to get STUPIDER because it is only the sub-IQ who continue to breed indiscriminately and continuously. You have to be a special kind of stupid to breed when you have no education, are unemployed and/or homeless. How can you take care of kids when you cannot take care of yourself?

I can assure you, from the horses mouth so speak, that falling pregnant for a child grant is aliving and kicking in the East London area, my wife is a social worker and has worked with these kinds of cases over and over. Even though these girls are HIV+ and have had more than one child (all previous ones removed, thats why they keep falling pregnant) to simply apply and recieve the child grant...where does this money go you may ask? On clothes, alcohol...etc. A minute fraction is actually spent on the child...Not an old persons view either, my wife is only 27 and has been doing this sort of work since age 21.

"could it be that teenage boys ? and passing men -- just want to get their rocks off and damn the consequences?" Yes of course it is... Dont pretend you were absent of the most primal of human impulses at that age or even now. Yes it is stupid and at our current ages we may know better BUT this type of thing has been occuring since the dawn of time. lets not pretend otherwise.
