Question
I am 25 yrs, and I'm pregnant 11 weeks, so I don't have interest in having sex with my husband. Every time I have sex with him, I cry. It's not painful.
Please reply.
Answer
Dear Nonyaniso,This is a common problem. Once the woman is pregnant, it is as if all interest in sex disappears. However, this can also lead to serious breakdown in the marriage, as the need for sexual fulfillment does not decline in the man.
You need to work hard on your communication, tell your partner how you feel. Spend time together and find ways to stay sexually connected.
I am not a sex therapist - I am really a parenting expert. But I do know that this sort of problem can lead to very serious problems and that this is not what you want to give your unborn baby ie parents whose relationship is over before he/she is born.
My advice would be to find a counsellor who is qualified to help you.
Try phoning the FAMSA office in your area. Or talk to your doctor or clinic sister. I assure you that you are alone - many women feel the same way. Often because there is a fear of hurting the baby - but, as long as sex is not too strenuous, it will not harm the baby.
It really is a matter of trying to keep a positive mindset - and this can only come about through open and honest communication.
Good luck to you both.
- Anne Cawood
