Question
I just got the results of my son indicating that he is ADD. I don't know what to do, know nothing of it. I've read an article on Ritalin and it does not sound good to me, is there any other way I could help him?
Answer
Dear Unetta,I am not a doctor or an Educational Psychologist, so I cannot really advise you. I would need to know who diagnosed your son's ADD? This person should have informed you of all the relevant facts. You need to be sure that this is an accurate diagnosis. Some times this label is too readily given. I am assuming that you had a thorough assessment by a well-qualified person.
Ritalin causes much discussion. As a School Counsellor I have seen how it can really help children to cope and to reach their potential, which they may otherwise not have achieved. Once again, this drug must be properly administered by a doctor - and then monitored carefully.
Find someone who can assist you face-to-face with your questions and concerns. This is an issue that needs professional input.
ADD children also need very firm and consistent boundaries and they benefit from calm and predictable routines. Good luck.
