Question
Hi, I am really struggling to get my 2-year-old son to listen, follow directions, stop when I tell him to. I don't know if I'm a failure at parenting or if he's just too hard-headed. Do you have suggestions where I can go for parenting classes in Cape Town. Thanks, Helen
Answer
Dear Helen, Your son is really still a a baby. It takes time and a great deal of patience to develop the skills needed to listen and co-operate. So much of it is dependent on the way the parents manage the child. You are certainly not a failure – maybe you just need to have realistic expectations and a bit of input of what to expect at this age. You need to be consistent and very repetitive. Calmly restate the rule over and over.eg "We do not hit the cat" .....or whatever he is doing. Then give him gentle choices "If you hit the cat you may need to sit in the quiet corner for a few minutes" If necessary, stay with him – he will soon realise that you mean what you say. The key to it is your firm yet gentle consistency. If you would like to phone my practice for advise re parenting issues, the no is 021 6741760. Or you could phone the Parent Centre in Wynberg. Good luck- Anne Cawood
