Question
Hi there,
My daughter will be 7 in May. She occasionally still wets the bed. We have tried not to make an issue of it but she has siblings that tease her incessantly. I wake her up most nights to take to the loo and she does wake up herself some nights as well. We've tried to restrict her drinking patterns.
I was a bedwetter myself until 13 and so was my father apparently. My elder daughter also struggled with bedwetting until she was about 8.
Is there anything else we can try?
Answer
Dear Celeste,It sounds as if you are doing everything you can. It certainly sounds as if there is a genetic component to this. The most important thing is to reassure the child that there is nothing naughty - or intentional about the bedwetting. Remaining calm and non-reactive is the key to it.
You need to establish a very firm family rule - "we do not tease or humiliate each other in this family" Tell them all that you and your Dad had the same problem and remind the elder one that she also battled. Then tell the children that, if anyone breaks the rule about teasing - there will be a consequence eg taking away a treat or privilege.
I am sure the bedweeter will overcome the problem - as the rest of the family has! Good luck
Regards
