Is your company day care up to scratch?
Working women want daycare, but are they happy with what's on offer?

It seems ideal – a caring place to leave your child, close to where you work. But company day care may not be the ideal choice for all working mothers.

According to the Women24 Female Nation Survey, around 1 in 14 women had company day care available to them (7%). Only 20% of those who had the option made use of it, however. Yet 64% of those who do not have an office day care say they would use it if it were available.

When employers do offer a well-run facility, it offers a unique opportunity for weekday closeness.

"We have an overwhelming demand, particularly for babies, because the moms want to keep breastfeeding. But all the way up to six years old we have a lot of demand. Employees have to put their names on a waiting list, and we always have people waiting," says Marilyn Sanders, coordinator of UCT Educare, which is on the University of Cape Town's campus and is open to children of staff members.

"I think it's important for employers to provide the option of daycare for their employees," she says. "Parents feel good knowing their children are close by, and both moms and dads drop by during lunchtimes to visit. They also like knowing they are close in case of an emergency."

Do you have an option of day care at work? Do you use it? If not, what kind of day care would you prefer?

I have never seen company daycare in the corporate world in Cape Town. Haven't even heard of it in fact. Women have been asking for this for YEARS and coporates just shrug it off. i would love to see this become a reality for South Africa mothers. and yes, i would make use of the facilities.

If my company had a daycare I would definitely use it. I'm sure it would reduce absenteeism by at least 50%!

Old Mutual in Cape Town just opened a creche for staff members....but it is so expensive only married or high earners can afford it. At R1200.00 a month per child irrelevant of how old (infant, toddler, child). so it's not working for most of us.

If my wrk place had a creche I would definitely make use of it. Sadly, Mary the price of R1200 per child is pretty much the standard price for daycare fascilities here in Gautne! I would not mind paying this price to have my little one close to me.

criteria for a company opening a day care centres are pretty strict and quite expensive, so many smaller companies can't afford it.
