Sabine and I wanted to ahve a child when the circumstances allowed it, as Sabine was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 16. This disease affects the nervous system, which makes becoming and staying pregnant a tough situation.
The medication she takes would have a devastating effect on the foetus so Sabine would have to stop taking it, which would worsen her symptoms. She also has at least one bladder infection a month and we were aware that pregnancy would worsen this condition.
We married in May 2002, when Sabine was 32 and I was 30. We had discussed having a baby but the conversations were always short-lived as we knew the negative implications.
Our faith in the Lord Jesus is very strong and we believe in Him for Sabine's healing. We both, in our quiet time, prayed that we would be blessed with a child; if Sabine and the baby would both be fine through the whole pregnancy.
One Saturday, we were walking through a clothing store and I found Sabine and her mother looking at baby clothing, which is something they never do. I thought to myself: "That's odd."
But I left it at that. The next day (Sunday) before going to church Sabine mentioned she was a couple of days overdue. I suggested that we should try a home pregnancy test after church.
Well, those pink lines wasted no time in appearing, confirming that Sabine was pregnant. We were stunned, Sabine couldn't utter a word and all I could say was "wow". After that everything was silent.
I immediately remembered my prayer and knew that one of us would have to be strong. I took to praying and reading scriptures to my wife, and our faith in God became solid.
We made appointments to see all the doctors concerned, but before going to see them we prayed that Jesus would – through them – give us the reassurance that there would be no problem with this pregnancy.
Our GP told us that Sabine's bladder infections would worsen with pregnancy, but we chose not to accept this. Sabine's neurologist confirmed that there wouldn't be a problem if she went off the medication, and that it was early enough not to harm our baby.
Sabine is now 8 months pregnant and has not had one bladder infection in all this time, nor has she suffered any side effects of pregnancy. Our baby is doing very well and we can't wait to meet our little miracle!
