Go bananas
Bananas are the perfect food for babies and children. Here's why you should stock up...

They can be mashed into just the right consistency for your baby's development.

You can add a little breastmilk or formula to make a wonderful first food, mix with cereal for a more substantial meal, or blend with pudding for a healthy pudding for your toddler. They're good sliced on toast, mixed with peanut butter in a sandwich or just as they are.

A banana has four times as much protein as an apple, twice the carbohydrates, three times the phosphorous, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. A banana also contains 400mg of potassium (more than you need in a day). Because of the fructose, glucose and fibre it contains, a banana gives a sustained energy boost. Bananas combine well with other fruit. See if your baby enjoys these combinations:

  • Banana and pawpaw
  • Banana, strawberries and fresh mint
  • Banana and sweet potato (this sweet combo is surprisingly yummy and babies love the sweetness)
  • Banana and peach
