The anus is a tight orifice, not intended to have anything inserted into it. So this small opening will automatically tighten when something tries to get inside it.
There are ways of making it less painful. First of all your girlfriend has to be willing and be able to relax into it. She has to learn to relax her anal muscles. I suggest you start with anal play before you begin penetration – rimming (licking around the anus), inserting a finger, then 2, until her anus learns to relax with insertion.
Her anus is never going to stretch bigger – so read up on techniques of relaxing and doing safe and consensual anal play. Jack Morin has written a really good book on anal play – try get hold of it.
