Get moving
Take the hassle out of moving house by being organised and planning properly for the big day.
Article: Tracy Greenwood from Ideas
You have sold your house and bought a new one, and are really looking forward to gathering up your belongings and moving in but, first, you need to take on the daunting task of moving your entire household from one place to another.

Choose a removal company

Before you start phoning around in order to choose a removal company you will need to decide what items need to be moved and whether or not you will do the packing yourself, because these factors will influence the cost of the move.

Once you have made these decisions you can start asking around for quotes. Never accept telephonic quotation and always ask prospective movers how long their estimates are valid for and to provide you with contactable references.

Tracy Beech, sales manager at Pickfords Removals in Johannesburg, says you should take a number of factors into consideration when planning a move and, ultimately, you should feel satisfied that the removal company you have chosen is trustworthy.

She suggests asking the following questions when choosing an organisation to transport your valuable assets from one location to another.

  • How long has the company been operating?
  • How many vehicles does it own?
  • Does it have suffi cient staff to offer you a complete service?
  • Where in South Africa does the company have branches?
  • If you are moving overseas, does the company have representatives or an association with a local company in the country to which you are moving?
  • Are the vehicles well maintained?
  • Are the staff members trustworthy and have they been credit checked for previous offences?
  • Are the staff members adequately trained to carry out their duties properly?
  • How financially secure is the company?
  • Will high-quality materials be used for packing up your goods?
  • Are you sure that your furniture and appliances will receive the necessary care and attention?
  • Will you receive adequate back-up service after the move?

    Pack up

Choosing what to pack when needs careful thought and you should try to tackle one room at a time. Always leave kitchen and bathroom essentials until last and pack clothing according to the season. For example, if you are moving in summer, pack up all your winter clothes first.

Spare bedrooms, garages and studies are all rooms that can be packed up first. Using acceptable packing materials is always worthwhile.

If you elect to pack up your household goods yourself, check with the removal company to make sure the boxes and cartons you plan to use are of an acceptable quality.

Reels of news print, old newspapers, bubble wrap, blankets and bed linen can all be used to safeguard breakables that are packed in boxes, but avoid wrapping items in clothing and curtaining that tends to crease easily or you will find yourself with a great pile of ironing to do at the other end.

Brown packing tape, sturdy boxes, a notepad, a Stanley knife and a thick permanent marker are essential packing items. Pack one room at a time, carefully labelling boxes for easy reference at your new home. Also remember to draw a direction arrow on each box to prevent unnecessary breakages.

When packing a box, place a layer of crumpled newspaper in the bottom, then carefully pack the box and stuff crumpled paper into empty spaces to prevent items from rolling around.

When stacking packed boxes to be ready for collection on moving day, take care to place heavy boxes on the floor and lighter boxes on top. Never over-pack boxes. Consider packing bed linen, curtaining and other soft goods in black bin liners to prevent dust accumulation during the move.

Frasers International Removals offers the following advice to safeguard your possessions against damage that could be caused by fire, explosion or leakage while in transit.

  • Dispose of flammables, such as matches, cleaning fluids, fireworks, chemistry sets, aerosol cans, ammunition and acids.
  • Drain the petrol from your lawnmower and other machinery and dispose of partly used cans of paint, oil, thinners and other substances that may leak. Mike Kitshoff, chairman of the Professional Movers Association (PMA), says he hears horror stories on a daily basis about clients contracting small companies to move them and paying a deposit only to find that the company does not turn up on the day of the move.

He urges clients to choose reputable removal companies that offer a high standard of service, trained staff and top-class packing material.

  • Contact the PMA in Cape Town on 021 553 4318 or in Pretoria on 012 349 1256 for further information, or visit the website www.pmamovers.co.za
