Sweet nothings (chocolates)
You will need:
To make:
Break the chocolate into pieces. Place all the pieces in a glass bowl over gently simmering water to melt. Stir gently until all the chocolate has melted. Spoon into square moulds. Leave to set at room temperature. Remove from the moulds and leave to cool completely on a cooling rack.
Melt the white chocolate in the same way, and spoon into a piping bag. Pipe the letters M and O onto the chocolate squares. Pipe twice as many m's as o's so that you can eventually put them together to spell the word MOM.
Allow to set, then pack into a small box with a see-through lid. Add some fresh flowers or rose petals and pack the chocolates in tissue paper to complete the gift.
Colour code (laundry bags)
You will need:
To make the templates:
Choose a bold font size and font type on your computer that will form an easy shape to sew around. Type and print the words "whites" and "brights". Enlarge on a photocopier if necessary.
To sew:
1. Fold the fabric in half and iron the fold line to form the lower edge of the bag. Cut out the template letters from the fabric and apply interfacing or appliqué paper to the wrong side of the fabric. Pin the letters onto the fabric approximately 12cm from the fold line.
2. Satin-stitch each letter in place with a sewing machine, using black thread for the white bag and white thread for the pink bag. Use a wide and close setting to create the desired effect.
3. With the right sides of the fabric facing, machine-stitch the sides. Fold a 4cm-wide double casing at the top edge and stitch in position, leaving the seam open on one side to pass the cord through. Thread the cord through and tie the ends together to secure.
Love on board (note board)
You will need:
To make:
1. Using the sponge roller, give the Supawood square a white base coat. Leave to dry, then paint with two or three coats of pink.
2. To build the easel, mark the measurements on a flat surface. Measure a 60cm line and make a mark 30cm from one side to indicate the middle of the line. From the centre mark, measure another line of at least 175cm at 90° to the first line. This will help you to position the easel legs at a right angle.
3. Measure 11,5cm and 68,5cm from the top of each leg to mark the places for the horizontal supports.
4. Place the legs on the grid that you drew earlier. Position them 60cm apart with the top parts meeting on the line in the middle.
5. Align the short support with the topmarking – its broad side should be on the legs. Position the longer support lower down – its narrow side should be on the supports. Use No More Nails to glue the horizontal supports onto the legs, and leave to dry.
6. After the glue has set, secure the supports from the back with nails, taking extra care with the lower one.
7. Glue the moulding onto the outer edge of the lower support to keep the board in place. The groove of the moulding should face upwards to create a space for the chalk.
8. Saw the tops of the legs parallel to the supports, about 5cm from the top. Paint the easel white and leave to dry.
Her own story (journal)
You will need:
To make:
1. Use a computer to type out the words "Mom's journal" in landscape format, in different types of font. Vary the size of the fonts and space the words unevenly to create more interesting detail. Print out on standard white printing paper.
2. Lay a small hardcover notebook on a piece of newspaper and spray one cover with spray glue.
3. Once the glue starts getting tacky, carefully position one side of the printed page onto the sprayed area. Take care to position the lettering right side up and try to keep it in line with the edges of the notebook.
4. Turn the book over and spray the other side. Once the glue starts getting tacky, fold the rest of the printed page over and glue in position.
5. Fold the overlaps of the paper to the inside of the book to cover it. Using a glue stick, secure the overlaps on the inside of the covers.
6. Attach a piece of satin ribbon to the inside of the back cover with double-sided tape to be used as a bookmark. Cut the free end of the ribbon at an angle to keep it from fraying.
