Beach-house style
This décor style is informal and romantic, featuring tongue-and-groove panels and open roof beams.
The predominant colour is usually white, with accents in soft, faded shades of blue, red or pink. The textures are earthy, coarse and natural. Accessories generally have a seaside theme.
1. Ceiling and wall finishes
The open roof beams create a feeling of space, while the tongue-and-groove panels on the walls and roof, which have been painted white, make the room appear larger and
lighter.
Rooms without ceilings are usually unpleasantly warm in summer. A finish such as IsoBoard's tongue-and-groove panels provide the perfect isolation in such a room.
2. Light
Large French doors and windows allow natural light
to stream in. They also emphasise the view.
3. The right accessories
Accessories with a seaside theme contribute towards the beach-house atmosphere. Examples are these shell-shaped tea-light candleholders and mother-of-pearl bowls.
4. Old and new
The classical curves of an antique wooden chair add
a touch of diversity to the remaining comfortable, informal furniture.
5. Floor
A limewashed wooden floor clearly says 'beach house'.
Its charm will increase as it wears over time.
6. Window treatments
The emphasis is on simplicity – heavy window décor will detract from the view. Blinds are simple yet functional, while the windows with the best views should
have no window treatments at all.
7. Colour scheme
White creates a cool, restful background. Soft,
faded shades of blue, such as the Delft patterns on this
scatter cushion, and the splashes of pink added by the
mother-of-pearl dishes, are traditional accent colours in
beach houses.
8. Something luxurious
The marble top of the coffee table is a luxurious element amidst the earthy fabrics and textures.
9. Texture
The coarsely woven mat suits the beach-house style. It
adds character by creating a contrast with the smooth
surface of the floor.
10. Furniture placement
All the upholstered furniture has been positioned so that the sea view can be enjoyed during the day and the
owners can make the most of the fireplace on chilly
evenings.
A wooden table is a handy halfway stop when heading outdoors with food and drinks. The balcony can be reached without walking through the seating area.

| I live in Windhoek Namibia and am in the process of realising the beach house decor theme in my home. Quite a few people have commented on "my beach house in Windhoek" so I seem to be pulling it off. As yet, I still haven't figure out what to put on the walls, but I will get there. | ||
