French country
Our style of the month – French Country – is stylish, individual and cosy. The combination of old and new elements, and a strong focal point, makes this room special.

What is French Country?
The French style refers to the glamorous décor with prominent decorative elements that characterised the era of Louis XIV. Gold detail and engraving was typical, and tables and other items of furniture were noted for their sensuous curves.

Gold and glamour are once again fashionable, although nothing like the excessive displays that were once seen at the Palace of Versailles.

In the room in our photograph interior decorator Elmarie de Waal from Designée created a cosy unit by combining elements of this style, such as the fireplace, mirror and coffee table, with the Country style.

The Country style dates from the days when the British elite would set off to their weekend country houses to hold parties, hunts and play tennis, followed by cucumber sandwiches or a cigar in the drawing room. These homes of the wealthy had spacious rooms containing Victorian and Edwardian décor and soft accessories.

1. Focal point
This is the most important component of any décor scheme. A fireplace is a traditional focal point, and it is strengthened in this room by the mirror with its gilded frame.

2. Balance and proportion
This room is reasonably large, and accessories such as a lamp with a solid, sturdy base help to balance the décor. This is also a good, affordable way to furnish a room that is larger than what your budget can afford.

3. Comfort
The French style can be quite formal but soft, plump scatter cushions with soft pink as an accent colour invite you to make yourself at home with a glass of wine.

4. Combine old and new
This charming French coffee table with a marble top works well with the new sofa and easy chairs. It puts an individual stamp on the room.

5. Texture
The coarse texture of the grass mat creates an interesting contrast to the softer textures of the curtains and upholstery.

6. Keep it light
A few coats of white paint are a way to counteract a wooden ceiling that would otherwise appear too dark. The reason? A white ceiling reflects natural light during the day and electric light at night.

7. Colour scheme
A neutral colour scheme such as this one can be altered by adding a few accent colours. The soft green creates a cool, restful atmosphere.

8. Different heights
Accessories of different heights, such as the chandeliers and lamp, add balance to the décor.

9. Architectural detail
Emphasise architectural detail – whether it is a fi replace, ceiling beams or pillars. These strong lines draw attention and lead your eye to the focal point.

10. Timeless pieces
Choose timeless furniture, such as these easy chairs and sofa, as the basis for your living room. It will survive several seasons – and fashions – and if you get bored you can reupholster or brighten up by adding different accessories.

I love the african colonial style. I love shopping at Whetherlys. I also like visiting the Bali shops for unusual pieces. I get a lot of ideas from magazines but have my own style of putting things together. I use earthy colours, then use an accent colour. At the moment it is burnt orange and burgendy. I do like to change the accent colours regulary. I dont sit with the same style year after year. My decor scheme changes every few years.
