Good day
Enid Blyton and her wonderful stories are one of my happiest childhood memories. My "very posh" school and public library also banned her books because, it was said, the girls would read nothing else if Enid Blyton was allowed.
Of course, nothing like banning something to make it really seem worthwhile. I remember receiving birthday gifts of postal orders from loving aunts and it was enough to buy the latest Enid Blyton hardcover. What delight.
I think it does matter what our children read and what they watch, but not all TV is bad nor all books good. Perhaps parents should first view and read material available to children and then decide.
Richard Scarry was also a no-no because his animal characters were dressed up and that wasn't right. Beatrix Potter was, I've heard said, a cruel woman who cut up bunnies and baby mice doing experiments. And then we have cannibalism being glorified in Hansel and Gretel, stepmothers not getting a fair chance at all and a really tarty au pair kept as a slave by seven strange little men.
Quite amazing that so many of us are fairly well adjusted. Perhaps we should skip the analysis after all and just enjoy the stories.
