According to Johannesburg-based corporate coach Annalie Frost, these are some of the common symptoms of stress. She spends a lot of time working with career women who're struggling to balance all the demands of their working and personal lives and says that it is a growing epidemic.

"When chatting to these women, two constant themes come through," she comments. "Firstly, working women have very diverse and often conflicting responsibilities. This creates overload, and balance becomes crucial. "Secondly, and almost paradoxically, they're under a lot of financial strain. On the one hand, their quality of life has improved a lot, but the cost of living has also increased, and that creates stress."

Penny Him Lok, a Johannesburg business and executive coach says: "In addition, women in the workplace have to deal with a lack of confidence, as well as the fact that they're often quite risk-averse, which is opposite to the way business is traditionally structured. They also don't have enough role models, and suffer from what I call the '24/7 syndrome' the need to over-achieve.

It's no wonder most of us are so stressed. And while a certain level of stress is necessary to ensure your body functions efficiently, it's important to realise that too much stress can be harmful to your health. Besides the mental and emotional toll stress takes on you in the form of anxiety, sleeplessness and depression, it's also a major risk factor in heart disease, strokes and even cancer.

It's not good enough to simply grit your teeth and press on when it feels as though the world's collapsing around you. Stress management is a vital survival skill that needs to be practised daily.

"Stress is always there, but your response to it is key," says Penny. "We can only control our own thoughts and attitudes. What we choose to focus on and how we respond determines our stress levels," she concludes.
