You were idolised by your pals 'cause as much as they were your wheels, your car became their ride too.
Size wasn't an issue either; for every person in your caddie, came a welcoming lap.
Petrol was also A LOT cheaper and when you did, perhaps, blow all your cash on booze, there was always one (or all) of your other passengers willing to lend a hand.
A smooth ride
But, you're a mommy now and so, the perfect car no longer doubles up as the party car. No. Now you worry about safety, dream of comfort, and look for a car that's possibly light on juice, both in the tank and all over the back seat.
The top 5
So, what do mommy car shoppers need to know? We spoke to the gals and guys at Wheels24. Here's what Hailey Philander says:
Family cars:
We all know that it's impossible to enjoy a family outing if the entire road trip is an ugly fight for space. So here are Hailey's top 5 most comfortable family cars. (Fishing rod in the back of your head notwithstanding.)
Fuel-efficient cars:
"It's practically impossible to state that one car is more fuel efficient than its rival," says Hailey, "because there are many external influences affecting fuel consumption too."
Take note of your tyre pressure, but also bear in mind that the faster you go, the more petrol you'll mince. This, according to Hailey, is the biggest variable. That said, these cars tend to be kinder...
Safest cars:
What constitutes 'safety' to you? "Again," Hailey cautions, "there are several things dictating what makes a car safe, but most cars that don't already come with ABS and other electronic goods, can be spec'ed to include up to seven airbags – depending on the brand, of course." Here are her recommendations.

| I bought a Hyundai Matrix four years ago. A perfect size for myself, two boys and bikes or friends, seaside trips etc. It was utter bliss! Then I met a wonderful man with a son, he moved in, we got married and all of a sudden, this majorly spacious car became just enough for two adults, two nine year old boys and one six year old! No bikes and squished seaside holidays. Now we have a baby on the way. Heeeelp! From squished, in March next year we will be 'impossibly to fit'. There are beautiful six seaters out there - just one problemo - the price! It costs to be a soccer mom!! NO longer am I worried about a sexy little run about in my colour of choice. Not its all about s-p-a-c-e and safety of course. Anything not to hear 'mom, he's in my space!!!!!' Thinking of buying a Volksie Bus!! | ||

| Similar predicament - my three kids live far away from me, so I needed something safe and comfortable for long trips. Then I met a gorgeous lady, with two of her own - talk about cramped when you go on holiday! Finally found a god condition 2nd hand Hyundai Trajet, with a towbar - essential - at a reasonable price. It's a diesel, with a surprisingly good consumption, space for all and all the safety features you would want. Originally looked at the Sedona, but just couldn't afford the more than 300 000 for it! | ||
