Chicks and cars

Is the theory that your keys do the courting really true? Sbu takes the debate for a test drive.

A schoolboy who couldn't have been a minute older than eight years old, walked to the passenger side of Zola 7's purple Crossfire where I comfortably sat. Maybe I looked too comfortable because he looked me straight in the eye and delivered this cool insult: "Uyajabula ne? Ujola necelebrity and linekari egrand." Loosely translated, he was telling me how ecstatic I must be to be dating a celebrity with a nice car.

What he said couldn't have been further from the truth. I was an irritated journalist who had waited for more than two hours for the star to arrive for an interview and got stuck in his car while he entertained his fans.

However, I was really surprised that at his age, this boy had already developed the attitude that all girls really aspire to warm up the passenger's side of cute cars. He was just saying what many men believe. But I still had to wonder who had put these corrupt thoughts in his young mind.

There has always been an issue about women and cars. Apparently, that's why we are with the men we are with – we love the Rovers, the Beemers and the Mercs.

Let your keys do the courting
In Durban they say let your keys do the courting. This means that a man need not even ask a woman out if he has the right set of keys.

My pastor back home used to say that young, wayward women could tell just by the sound of an engine what make the car was – even if they didn't own one. Boys used to love that joke and took it as the gospel truth.

But car advertisements feed into this belief. It's not likely that you'll see an ad with a woman driving an executive car – she is more likely to be white, near naked and hanging on the passenger side or clutching the bonnet for dear life.

And how many times have you heard someone say: "No, it can't be her car. I'm sure she's pulled a Khanyisile Mbau" when a woman pulls up in a nice vehicle?

The fact is, not all cars are deposited or bought by a man who has become a victim of a gold digger. If that is the case then we can safely say that all black men in snazzy cars should be stopped by the Police and asked for proof of ownership. After all, if a black man is driving a BMW, he stole it, got it as a kickback in a BEE deal or is a chauffer.

RE: Article "chicks and cars" by Sbu Mpungose. i think it is very streotypical for people to think that every chick is a gold digger and also to undermine women who have honestly worked hard for their cars. People should be more open minded. I love my man even though he doesn't have a car and I don't envy a guy who has a car, because they have their own problems but that is clouded by this stupid image of the beautiful life he's living just because of the car his driving.

Is it enough to be on someone else 's car.NO.Then buy your own.

Answering your question would be giving in the stereotypical views that our societies seem to have on us these days, especially women. Maybe you should answer yourself that question. Why do you date your man Sbu? I don?t think even the high school kids would discuss such an irrelevant topic. I'm tired of being put in a societal BOX

There must be some truth in it - after all, my wife, not my girl, left me for a rich guy with nice cars whilst I was under the impression that we have a wonderful marriage. What an idiot I was.

Not too sure what Sbu is trying to say here? Is she talking about chicks and cars or is this another sorry racial issue? Either way, shockingly poor article. Hope the readers of Move! magazine don't pay for this kind of journalism? Very poor!

Some men definitely believe women will go for them according to their status- money- car etc. i see it around me all the time and there are women (young girls) that fit exactly into that picture.

Hey guys, play nice! Sbu is entitled to her opinion and she is not saying all men or all women are like that! She is merely pointing out the facts. True, many women date a man because of his car and money, but also lots of women won't, they date because of love. So let her have her opinion, if you don't agree, at least be nice about it! It's good to be critical, but you guys are just downright nasty.

the world is shallow & revolves around 'man', ofcourse chicks like boys with cars, the wo'man' has her own mind but also loves prety things. this being like seven out of ten wo'men' i know. generally we are moving away from this but lets face facts. anyway they aren't going to like come out about it anytime soon.
