MOTORING EXPERT: Hailey Philander

MOTORING

Hailey is the news editor for www.wheels24.co.za, South Africa's biggest motoring website.

She's passionate about cars, particularly hot hatches, sports cars and anything with sliding doors, and relishes the opportunity to live her passion every day. She also loves any stretch of open road, the sight of a guy on a superbike, playing with other peoples' babies and puppies and spending time chilling with her friends.

As the only female journalist on a team of males, she finds that females relate to cars in a very different way to males, and enjoys finding ways of sharing some of these differences with readers.

Before joining Wheels24, Hailey was associate editor for CARtoday.com, the online publication affiliated with the biggest motoring magazine in South Africa. And while she has been writing about cars for a few years now, she still finds sliding behind the steering wheel of a new car, experiencing the machine, and sharing her thoughts with readers to be among the most thrilling feelings in her world.

That, and hearing the sound of a great engine while hastily making her way through a mountain pass...

Q & A of the day

Question

I'm looking to buying my first car soon and feel I am a bit spoilt for choice. I have reduced my options to three; Mazda 2 1.3 Active, Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 Active and the Opel Corsa 1.4 Essentia. Any suggestions? What would your pick be?

Answer

Hi Rose,

I would go for the Mazda2, but that's just because I love it so much.

On paper, the Corsa is the most powerful of three, although you'd be hard-pressed to physically feel this.

They are all fairly well equipped, however, the Mazda only has front electric windows and you'd have to pay extra for airconditioning in the Fiat.

The Mazda also has the smallest usable luggage area, while the Fiat has the biggest. However, all have seats that fold forward - that's rather useful in a pinch.

But if you're going to be driving the car for a while, you're the one who will need to be completely happy with your decision. Dynamically, I'd rate the Mazda higher, but I'd still suggest that you drive all the cars on your shortlist and narrow it down from there.

Fiat has unfortunately not had the best quality track record, but no importer's products are 100% perfect.

Good luck! Regards

- Hailey Philander
