Question
We've just moved in our new home, and the previous owners had a dog living inside the house. We don't have any pets, and now the house has this smell although we've rented a carpet cleaner to clean the carpets inside the bedroom and lounge, yet the smell is still lingering around. Any advise as to remove this smell permanently?
Answer
You will probably find that any messes have gone through the carpet and have been left in the underfelt. Cleaning the carpet will only clean the surface. I had a similar problem and the only way that I could remove the smell was to pour warm water over the smelly areas and then suck it up with the professional carpet cleaner. I had to repeat this process several times until the smell was gone.I would recommend that you only try this on a warm, dry (not humid) day when the carpet has sufficient chance to dry out properly.
The only other option... try to lift the carpet and replace the underfelt!
