Mosaic tea-light candle holders in minutes

Candlelight casts a soft glow in votives decorated with stained-glass offcuts.

You will need
Apart from the basic items, you will also require the following:
  • small glass votives or containers
  • stained-glass offcuts
  • clear silicone
  • light-grey grout

    To make
    1. Use a two-wheeled tile cutter or a pair of wheeled nippers to cut out small glass discs. Neaten the edges by cutting away ('nibbling') small sections right around as you go. Hold the handles towards the ends to give you a stronger grip and to provide more leverage, and rotate the glass between your fingers as you go. Keep going until you are satisfied. The little circles don't have to be perfectly round, or exactly the same. Repeat to make enough discs to cover the surface of the glass votive.

    2. Use a wooden spatula to smear a generous layer of silicone over a small section of the glass votive. The silicone must be thick enough for the glass discs to be secured to the votive with ease. Press the glass discs into the silicone, varying the sizes and colours of the discs as you go. Leave a few millimetres between each disc. These spaces will later be filled in with grout.

    3. Continue to cover the entire votive with glass discs. Then set aside for about three hours for the silicone to dry.

    4. Once the silicone is completely dry, mix a little light-grey grout in a plastic container. Add the water to the powder a little at a time until the mixture has the consistency of toothpaste.

    5. Smear the grout over the entire surface of the glass votive, ensuring you fill in every groove between the discs.

    6. Set the votive aside for about two hours to dry. Once completely dry, wipe it down with a damp sponge to remove the excess grout. Set aside for another hour to dry completely, before polishing the entire surface with a soft cloth.
