Dual-purpose room

Our dual-purpose room is a compact living area that allows you to create a home office in one corner.

Why dual purpose?
Many people work from home but not everyone has enough space to set up a separate home office. This trend has increased the popularity of multipurpose rooms. Our room has been laid out in such a way that a desk and computer can be accommodated in one corner.

This space can also be adapted to suit another purpose, when necessary. A laptop computer is a good choice because it doesn’t need much space and, when it is closed, it isn't obvious that this corner is being used as an office.

Furniture not intended specifically for office use is ideal for a multipurpose room as it can suit different functions and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.

1. Windows
It isn't always necessary to use window treatments. Leave windows uncovered if you have a beautiful view or if the sun isn't too intrusive.

2. Works of art
Adding paintings and sculptures is a good way to personalise a room and give it character.

3. Colour
The room has a neutral, earthy colour scheme that helps to create a warmambience. The blue accent colour adds a cool touch that contributes towards the relaxing atmosphere.

4. Contrast
The wooden coffee table has been painted white to create a beautiful contrast with the parquet floor. Without the layer of paint it would be hard to distinguish the coffee table from the floor.

5. Flooring
Parquet floors are timeless and can easily be sanded and restored if they eventually become damaged.

6. Wall paint
White is a good choice for a small room as it makes the area appear more spacious.

7. Lighting
Living rooms should be inviting; bright lighting is therefore out. The pendant lamp provides good lighting above the coffee table and creates soft, ambient lighting in the rest of the room.

8. Open packing space
In a compact room, open shelves work better than a large cupboard because they help to create the illusion of space.

9. Work area
It is a good idea to choose furniture for your home office that matches your living-room décor. The furniture can then be used for more than one purpose.

10. Upholstery
Don't be in a hurry to get rid of a sturdy, classic sofa once the upholstery starts to look worn. Rather reupholster it to create a new look.
