The Yin and Yang of power tools

Mine, yours and ours – DIY whiz, Janice Anderssen shows us how to share our tools...

As an avid do-it-yourselfer I'm lucky to have a husband who believes in the principle that if you want something done... "Do it yourself!"

But I'm also very lucky that I don't have to share my tools with anyone else. I can't imagine anything more frustrating than not being able to find a tool when I need it, or discovering that my favourite tool is broken or missing vital parts. Or even worse, it’s been lent to someone.

But what of the couples and roomies that have the same interests and share the same tools?

For those couples who just don't see eye-to-eye when it comes to projects around the home, or perhaps you have a different approach to the quality and make of tools to buy, then it's definitely time to get your own. The price of power tools has levelled out in recent years and it's now more affordable than ever to purchase essential tools that you can call your own.

Sharing is caring
For the more romantic couples who enjoy working together on projects, you could have two sets of tools – one for him and one for her. Could be a bit expensive, but then again it’s a small cost for domestic harmony.

The joy of this solution is that he gets to buy the big, noisy 'male' version whilst you opt for the ergonomic, quiet version of the same. Having two sets of tools also means that you can work together on DIY projects or home improvements – no fighting for who gets to use what tool!

It's also a great way to build up a comprehensive selection of power tools. For example:

She gets...
Cordless Screwdriver or combination Drill/Driver.
Jigsaw Multi Sander.

He gets...
Impact Drill.
Circular Saw.
Belt Sander.

With a collection of tools like this, any DIY or home improvement project will be a breeze. And who knows, perhaps later on the two of you will decide to club together for the more expensive items such as a Table Saw, Drill Press or Compound Mitre Saw.

For those lucky enough to have a workshop, or space in the garage for DIY projects, establish specific areas for storage and working.

DIY or home improvement should be a fun way for a couple to be able to show off the results of their hard work and not argue about which tool belongs to whom – home improvement is stressful enough as it is! Get your power tool needs sorted out right from the beginning and start working together on creating a beautiful home.
