Winter skin solutions

Is your skin suffering under the dry winter conditions? We give you great advice to help you care for your skin.

My skin looks and even feels different in winter. What do you advise?

The wind, cold and heating dry out your skin in winter. Without proper care and protection your skin cannot resist the elements. This could cause it to appear red and flaky, and to feel itchy. Rich face creams with enriching formulas that offer added moisture are the answer to this seasonal problem.

For your body
Johnson's Pure Tissue Oil with natural oils repairs and enriches the skin. Use it instead of your daily moisturiser, add a few drops to your bath water or slather it on instead of body lotion. Available in 60ml (R38,95) and 125ml (R59,95).

If you enjoy showering, try Dermud Moisturizing Shower Cream (R144) from Ahava – it has no soap and contains Dead Sea minerals and aloe. Also try Nivea Pampering Shower Oil (R26) with 55% oil and Lux Heavenly Milk Body Wash (R18). For a warm, moisturising soak inthe tub, try Dove Moisture Bath Balance (R20).

Pamper your skin with a rich body lotion. Try Olay Total Effects Body Anti-Ageing Moisturising Lotion (R100), or Foschini's Earthspa Body Butter (R70) with natural oils, vitamins, shea and cocoa butter. Also give L'Oreal Nutri Therapy Rich Repairing Anti-dryness Body Cream (R75) or Innoxa One and All Vitamin E Therapy (R40) a try.

For your face
Use a soap-free cleanser. Cream cleansers won't dry out your skin as much as rinse-off ones, but if you prefer a rinse-off cleanser, try Estée Lauder Soft Clean Moisture Rich Foaming Cleanser (R195) or Johnson & Johnson's Soft Foaming Cleanser (R39).

Choose a rich moisturiser to pamper your skin. For very dry skin, the new RoC Enydrial Extra-Emollient Face Cream (R135 for 40ml) with natural oils and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids is a great option. Clinique Exceptionally Soothing Cream for Upset Skin (R305 for 50ml) also offers added protection and nourishment for dry skin.

A good night cream is great for maintaining the moisture levels of mature skin. Gatineau Feminissence Restoring Night Cream (R450) is specially formulated for skin aged 45 and over.

For your lips
Dry, chapped lips are a common occurrence in the cold. La Mer's The Lip Balm (R350) contains proteins found in marine species in the Arctic. In the wild, these proteins prevent the organisms from freezing solid, so they really can protect your lips against the harshest conditions.

Also try The Body Shop Passion Fruit Lip Butter (R35). Justine Tissue Oil Lip Tints (R75) is a wonderful new product to try, offering an injection of moisture and a touch of colour at the same time. Sorted.
