DO...

  • smile – it's the easiest way to see where to apply blusher.

  • check the oil – cream blusher has a natural glowing finish which is great for dry skin types. If your skin is oily, opt for powder blusher – it contains less oil and waxes andtherefore has less shine.

  • go with the family – as a rule, match the undertone of your blusher to your lipstick. If your lipstick has a pink undertone, use a pink blusher; if peach, use a peachy blusher. For a more edgy look colours can clash, but this is best left to the pros.

  • brush up – use a good quality brush for seamless application. Tap off excess blusher before you place it on your cheek and thenblend, blend, blend.

  • ease up on the bronzer – Charlotte Tilbury, commenting on complexions this summer, said that there was barely a summery skin in the house this season. "Suntans have become too cheap, too Footballers' Wives and Paris Hilton." Lightly applied bronzer gives the skin a fresh glow, but take care that your skin doesn't scream "autobronzant!"

    DON'T...

  • be shy – blusher brightens up any complexion, but apply it in good light and blend it well.

  • go too low – the lowest point should be parallel with the end of your nose. Any lower and you'll look older.

  • do racing stripes – they'll fast-track you straight back to the 1980s. Blend blusher into a diffused wash over the apples of your cheeks.

  • fade away- at night, when light is dimmer, step up a little on the blush. Either apply a little more, or use a more intense shade of the one you usually wear.

  • forget highlighter – According to Terry Barber for MAC, "Base suddenly becomes more real and alive when you add some strategic highlights to it." A little shimmer on your cheekbones and at the sides of your face gives your skin a modern, youthful glow.
