Are SA women too fat?
Or are we facing unrealistic expectations from SA men? Laurie Crook points some fingers.
Article: Laurie Crook from women24

The banning of size 0 models from European catwalks last year was lauded as a triumph in the fight against anorexia. However, these international attempts at fighting eating disorders seem to be largely ineffective in
South Africa.

The obsession with thin is still growing strong in SA, with 21% of low income coloured women revealing in the Women24.com 2008 Female Nation Survey that they have suffered from an eating disorder. The stats for low and high income white, black and Asian women are similarly alarming.

South African celebrities tend to be a little less waif-like than their Tinseltown counterparts. But while women maybe comfortably sexy-heavier, SA men seem prone to trying to squishing us back into the Gisele Bunchen cookie cutter.

SA women: 'overweight, slovenly, desperate'...

A lot of men express the opinion that SA women in general are "larger" than women abroad. Could this be why less than 15% of us are "very happy" with their bodies?

I remember how last year a Dutch exchange student, who was working with me in the National Arts Festival press room, told a colleague of mine how "big" South African women are compared to the meisjes back in Holland.

And who can forget the slimy remarks made by Kevin van den Bergh in a 2007 You Magazine interview, where he claimed that he chose a Russian bride because SA women are "overweight, slovenly, desperate and full of complexes."

What I'd like to know is how many men agree with the opinions quoted above? Are my reservations about anorexic clothes-dummies and cadaverous celebrities over the top, because South African women actually do need to lose a few kilos? Or is it possible that it's this sort of ridiculous fixation on weight and slimming that causes us to have body issues in the first place?

What do you think? Join the discussion, or simply let us know what you think of Kevin van den Bergh, by using the comment box below.

SA woman fat? We are healthy. Has anyone been to the UK and the USA lately? The woman there make us look like size 0 models!
Nettie on 15 Aug at 08:10

I don't think as a rule that our ladies are too fat. I was in the States recently, and they are generally mcuh more overweight than SA women. Similarly, if men want skinny, then they should do awat with their bierpense and bad habbits as well ;-)

from the workplace,i noticed that; english women tend to remain skinny, even after marriage.. same for indian women its rare to find skinny black women afrikaner women blow up after getting married!! :-)

I can still remember at our 10 year highschool anniversary, how shocked I was to see how much my class mates "deteriorated" in those 10 years. At only 28, most women were overweight and unhealthy-looking (and I could still remember how good they all looked at 18!) Some of the men also shocked me, but the percentage of men who became overweight in those 10 years were a lot less than the women. Quite sad...

You call Dave stupid and insulting? Did you read your own post? Do you actually know that many and extensive studies have shown that the assumption about white men being under-priviliged when it comes to private parts are scientifically unfounded? It is just another African belief like so many other African superstitions based in campfire telltales of great achievement. You are probably one of the big, fat women Dave talks about hence your vitriolic response. Shame; now you're going to have too go buy a dictionary too.

Personnally I find overweight (not over sized) AND Overly thin females totally unattractive. Most distressing is counter to "black women"s comments, and dpending on race, that I have to agree with "dave & Tuffy". Yes, oversee's broads are in the majority "broad". In my opinion, in between is healthy and attractive, i.e. balance between too much and too little. The most important issue for me regarding women are their character. It makes up for most of the other "complexes".

Tuffy ur just another sad reflection of white men who believe in their superiority!!! Im glad u have many scientific research papers to ease ur size issues. Im guessing the research is superior to camp fire stories!!! lol ur suposition that ur intelligence far out reaches mine is mind boggling since it is based on ur assumption that u being white and me being black makes u smarter!!! great research there.... Pls do us AFRICANS a favour and tell us when ru moving to OZ???

Must women are too fat
John on 15 Aug at 10:27

Don't deal in extremities - I still "feel" that SA women are by far the most attractive on the planet - you shouldn't call it is a collective asking if SA women as whole are overweight. Sure just like most people we prefer a good body, mean are visual creatures, but I for one will not date someone who looks like a starving child that is not attractive, what is attractive is a woman at her best possible weight ratio and is confident with it, so if you are a 65kg girl and that is your body, be sexy in yourself. I am tall and lean with a good muscular composition, but that is my natural build, I am not going to be some beef hunk, and my attitude and dress sense match my looks - ladies should do the same. Confidence is reflected through radiance so don't be driven by the media's perception - we just like a good body, and respect and appreciate a girl who looks after herself, nothing wrong with a chocolate and some popcorn - I love SA women!!!
