Top 5 mascaras

It's amazing how such a little thing like mascara can make or break a look... try one of these picks for glam lashes that are fabulously smudge-free.

Mascara is the make-up bag essential. It frames your eyes and puts the finishing touch to any look. However nobody likes a gunky, clumpy mascara, especially not one that runs, smudges and leaves you looking like a gothic side-show freak. There are so many types of mascaras on the market, choosing the best one for you can be a tricky task. So, we've narrowed down the search for you and selected our favourite.

Our top 5 lash lovers
1. Best waterproof: Maybelline Great Lash, R69.95
Maybelline sells one of these mascaras every second, and it's been around since 1971. If that doesn't prove it's popularity, then I'm not sure what will. Maybelline Great Lash waterproof mascara is a classic. It doesn't clump, lasts a long time and won't come off easily.

2. Best for volume: Yardley Volume Lash Mascara, R54.95
This mascara contains a conditioning and lash thickening agent which treats your lashes with every application, creating full and dramatic lashes without clumping and flaking. And best of all, it comes at a fabulous price.

3. Best for lasting curls: Lancôme Virtuose Mascara, R260.00
This mascara has a nifty off-centre curled brush, and features a new formula called CurlGuard™ which adds to the curling factor. Aside from being long-lasting, it's smudge-proof and tear-proof, too.

4. Best for super lengthening: L'Oreal Telescopic Mascara, R115.95
Claiming to extend your lashes by 60%, L'Oreal's new Telescopic Mascara contains a flexible multi-comb brush which lengthens and separates, and despite being long-lasting, is easy to remove.

5. Best all-rounder: Bobbi Brown Everything Mascara, R170.00
This mascara is an everyday essential. It contains an innovative, all-in-one formula that lengthens, thickens, and defines – without smearing, smudging or clumping. A nifty little number for your handbag.

A few mascara tips

  • Always apply make-up in a stationary position. Mascara application in a moving vehicle may result in the loss of an eye, or at least a teary, smudgy one.
  • Blot the end of the wand on a tissue to clean off excess. This helps keep clumps off your lashes.
  • Apply to the upper lashes of one eye from base to end repeatedly, building on the ends, until you've got the right look. Then recoat the wand and switch to the other eye. Do the bottom lashes last holding your wand in a vertical position. You can also leave your bottom lashes free of mascara for a cleaner, more open appearance.
  • Opt for a waterproof mascara if there's any chance of a shower, swim or tearful moment in your immediate future. Nothing worse than raccoon eyes.
  • Remove every night (and I mean every night) with a proper makeup remover.
  • Mascara is notorious for being a germ magnet. Discard mascara after four months or when it begins to get dried out or clumpy.

My favourite mascara is the new PLUSH LASH by MAC. It is the first mascara that I have ever used that is true to its claim of 'No Clumps' and it gives brilliant definition to individual lashes.

Best mascara is Lancome - but it costs far too much. LOL Does it hack anyone else off when there are photos of eyes that are, supposedly, just mascara-ed, and they are so clearly false eyelashes?

I have tried some of the mascaras mentioned here, and by tea time I look like a raccoon! The ONLY one that I have found thus far (at any price) that REALLY DOES NOT SMUDGE, is Kanebo 38 degrees.

My fave is Avon's Incredible or Astonishing Lengths which is indeed incredible and astonishing. no clumps, no smudges, very smooth...i love it!

I use either Yardley Double Definition (white tube) or the Volume Lash mentioned here. Love the Volume Lash by far. I sometimes have a 16hour day & never go home with raccoon eyes

Being just about 60, in my time have tried lots of makes of mascara, I would never be seen dead without it, not quite Dusty Springfield, but use it lavishly, and at the moment am using Estee Lauder's Projectionist and think it is great, best I've tried for a long time if not ever.
