Too-much-party repair kit

Last night's party was good. But you don't feel that way no more. Besides, you look terrible.

Let's see how too-much-party damage can be undone and, even if there is no cure for a hangover, there are a couple of tricks to banish the beady red eye look of hangover not-chic.

A proper bash that goes on into the wee hours of the morning wreaks havoc with the body and skin. The worst symptoms are tiredness (lack of beauty sleep), dehydration (this is what alcohol does) and a toxic skin (alcohol, smoky pubs, too much party-make-up, junk food, etc. that load the liver, the organ made for processing whatever you put in your body).

Your face is unfortunately the one place where it's all going to show. But take heart – unless you do it seven days a week, it's all repairable. Here's the plan.

What are the skin signs of too much partying?

  • Rings under the eyes;
  • puffy eyes;
  • pale, almost grey skin colour;
  • spots;
  • dry, flaky, wrinkled skin;
  • dilated capilliaries.

    How do I fix it?
    Immediately after party
    Remove all traces of make-up – if you're low on energy, try MAC Wipes for minimum hassle. Brush your teeth and drink as much water as you can. A vitamin B and C supplement will immediately start reversing any damage you've already done to yourself. Apply a nourishing moisturiser such as Galenic Nutritive which helps the skin's natural cell metabolism and reduces moisture loss.

  • Tip 1: Germans swear by soaking your feet in warm water to which a couple of drops of aromatherapy oil, lavender, for instance, have been added (just be careful you don't topple on over into it). This not only soothes danced-out feet, but magically reduces the amount of bacteria that cause hangover breath the next day.

  • Tip 2: A good friend of mine says you should smear petroleum jelly all over your eyes – right around to the brow and under the eyes. I haven't tried it, but she says it works like a bomb to prevent eyes looking like tiny puffs of redness the next day. Apparently it's just as good if you've had a deep-cleansing sob.

    What can I do the morning after?
    From the inside
    Drink lots of water to re-hydrate your parched organs (including skin), eat light meals like fruits and yoghurt (a greasy fry-up is only going to tax your liver more, making your skin look worse). Go for a gentle walk to help your body shift toxins and boost circulation.

    On the outside
    Depuff your eyes and get the blood flowing to this area by dunking your face in cold water, applying ice blocks to the under-eye area or using a good gel like Estee Lauder Eyezone Repair Gel.

    If you have time for the quick-fix effect of an energising mask, try Clarins Thirst Quenching Hydra-Balance Mask. Exfoliating with a creamy scrub will prevent further moisture loss from your skin while giving the skin a bit of a polish. Try Payot Gommage Douceur, otherwise known as Gentle Scrubbing Cream.

    Topping off with a toner is a must – you can make your own by mixing Green Tea leaves (ground in a pestle and mortar) in a (porcelain cup) of boiling water. Whisk with an egg whisk. Allow to cool, then splash all over skin. It tones and lifts skin, while calming inflamed spots and feeding the skin with energy-giving nutrients.

    Don't use a heavy moisturiser – your skin simply won't be able to cope and with all the detoxing it'll be doing, a rich moisturiser will only leave your skin looking shiny while clogging pores.

    A better bet is one of the new-generation 'lifting and firming' lotions, like Estee Lauder Idealist Skin Refinisher or Gatineau Strategie Jeunesse Anti-Fatigue Concentrate which tones and stimulates the skin. Skin replenishing moisturisers include Orlane B21 Absolute Skin Recover and Avon Botanisource Comforting Moisture Cream.

    New on the market is Justine's O2 Extreme Serum that contains ingredients that increase fibroblast activity, literally 'breathing life-giving oxygen' into your skin. Use before moisturising.

    How can I make it all disappear
    Cover unexpected spots and dark circles under the eyes with a good concealer, like Clarins Concealer and Corrector (it also heals).

    If you're wearing foundation (you'll probably need it) go for one with light-reflecting properties that'll make the skin at least look as if it is radiant and healthy. An excellent one is Lancome's Photogenic which also has a cocktail (don't let this word put you off) of energising Vitamin C, Ginkgo and Ginseng to revitalise the skin.

    Another option is Revlon Skinlights Face Illuminator Lotion, also packed with skin-enhancing vitamins and minerals, and which cleverly masks a tired and ravaged skin.

    No7 Instant Radiance (from Clicks stores) contains seaweed extract which helps deliver those essential skin-brightening and revitalising minerals and larch extract which increases your skin's ability to hold water and plump out stress lines.

    Go easy on eye-make up; you don't want to draw more attention to those 'pissholes in the snow'. A sweep of mascara is ample to open the eyes out.

    A little secret: dot a spot of light concealer (lighter than your skin), or a white eye-pencil on the inner corner of the eye and smudge towards the eye lid area. It's an instant eye-refresher trick used by professional make-up artists who have to constantly repair partied-out models.

    Blusher – a rosy pink – (not brown or any colour with yellow undertones) applied to the apple of your cheeks is the best way to fake health.

    Bright red lips will draw all attention away from your struggling features, and is the cleverest thing you can do, fooling even the most sassed hangover spotter in the office.

    Finally, check you make-up throughout the day and dab translucent powder – try L'Oreal Visible Lift compact powder that promises to stay out of fine lines while skimming over imperfections – over shiny noses and chins whenever need it.

    Keep up your water intake, breathe deeply to detox your hard-working lungs and take a relaxing walk at lunchtime. Before you know it, you're ready to party again.
