The possible causes of cellulite include metabolic disorders, hormonal changes or a weakened lymphatic system, which is why dimpled skin often appears during puberty or menopause. Other possible causes are stress, indigestion (the body doesn't rid itself of toxins) and yo-yo dieting. The worst-affected areas are usually the buttocks, hips and thighs.
Although massaging and cellulite cream or gel won't get rid of the problem completely, these products will improve the texture and appearance of the skin. Cellulite creams are formulated to help drain toxins and improve circulation. They also firm the skin and make it appear smoother.
Polish Your Body
Scrub your body regularly to get rid of
dead skin cells. This will ensure that cellulite
creams penetrate more effectively, help
your moisturiser to do its job, and give you
soft, smooth skin. While you shouldn't
scrub your face more than once a week,
you can do your body up to three times a
week ¬ especially the elbows, knees and
upper arms.
Tip Remember that a regular scrub will dry out your skin, so you should always apply a moisturiser afterwards.
How to use a body brush
1. Use a coarse face cloth, body glove or
a firm body brush (available from Clicks,
Woolworths or The Body Shop) and scrub
your dry skin before you bath or shower.
2. Brush your skin in the direction of the
lymph nodes, which are located under the
arms, in the groin, abdomen and neck.
3. Start with the soles of your feet, then
work in the direction of the heart using
long, firm strokes.
4. Once you've done your legs, move on
to the abdominal area in smooth, circular
movements.
5. Now start on the outside of your hands
and work up your arms to the shoulders.
6. Jump in the shower.
Tip Do not use your body brush on your face, or over cuts and abrasions. If you experience discomfort at any time, try brushing more gently or use a softer brush or glove until your skin has become accustomed to it
Good Idea
Improve the texture of your
skin and your circulation
by brushing it for four
or five minutes before
showering or bathing
in the morning. Use a
body glove or firm brush
(not too hard – test it on
the back of your hand)
and move it across the affected
areas in circular
movements.
