Anti-ageing – the soft options
Cosmetic surgery is popular to reverse the signs of ageing. But for those who seek a less painful route, we answer frequently asked questions about anti-ageing products.

What happens to your skin as you age?

As you age, your skin’s needs change. The skin generally becomes finer, drier and, as the natural production of elastin and collagen slows down, less elastic. This means you will eventually have to change your skin-care routine.

Why does one’s skin age?

Internal factors

  • genetic causes
  • metabolic wear and tear
  • decline in oil and hormone production

    External factors

  • stress
  • free radicals
  • smoking, alcohol, poor diet
  • sun, pollution and other environmental factors
  • the use of strong products that eventually affect the skin’s natural barrier function

Four lifestyle factors that change your skin

One. Sunbathing or lying on a sun bed adds 20 years. Many dermatologists believe sun beds cause even more damage than the sun, because they radiate pure UVA rays that penetrate the skin very deeply.

Two Stress adds three years. This is especially true for those with stressful lifestyle habits such as drinking too much caffeine and alcohol, not getting enough sleep and skipping meals. None of these does your skin any good.

Three City life adds five years. Exposure to pollution brings about free radicals that attack healthy skin cells. You needn’t move to the country, but do use a moisturiser that’s rich in antioxidants to control the damage.

Four Crash diets add 10 years. They deprive the skin of important nutrients, and when you lose weight fast, your skin stretches and sags.

When should one start using anti-ageing products?

Look in the mirror, not at the calendar, says Dr Gerald Imber, author of The Youth Corridor (read it online at www.drimber.com). What matters is what’s happened to your skin, not your age. The the first signs of ageing – fine lines and lifeless skin – begin to appear, usually between 25 and 30. It’s time to adopt an anti-ageing strategy. This includes using eye cream and moisturiser with antioxidants for extra protection.

  • Try Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Plump Perfect Moisture Cream SPF30 (R410), which offers outstanding sun protection and contains special ingredients for a former skin.

  • Yardley Puretime Age Control (R175), with an oil-free gel formula that is easily absorbed, and Justine A-Firm Day Complex SPF15 (R220).

How quickly will I see results?

Most beauty products give fast results to live up to the expectations of consumers. Thanks to intense moisturisation, some products can change the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles within days. More significant changes then become apparent after four weeks – the time it takes for the skin to renew.

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are powerful and deliver fast results, whereas retinoids take longer.

  • Try RoC Retin-Ox Correxion (R280), which contains a trio of ingredients to promote cell renewal and collagen production and promises to give back 10 years to the age of your face in 12 weeks.

  • Nivea Visage Anti-Wrinkle Q10 Plus Day Créme (R110) and Night Cream (R110) contain coenzyme Q10 to visibly reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

  • Crème de la Mer (R850 to R1 500) was developed by astrophysicist Dr Max Huber after he was badly burnt during an experiment with rocket fuel 40 years ago. Simple ingredients such as sea kelp, calcium, vitamins and various oils are turned into a rich concoction after a biofermentation process lasting several months.

  • Lancôme Primordiale Optimum Visibly Smoothing Moisturiser/Fluid (R545) Correcting Serum for Lines/Wrinkles

  • Justine A-Firm Day Complex SPF15 (R220).

Is there a natural anti-ageing product I can use?

If your skin is sensitive, avoid retinoids. Plant oils are more gentle. Kinetin, from a plant source, gives similar results to retinol, but without the potential to irritate the skin.

  • Try Clarins Super Restorative Day Cream (R720) and Night Wear (R760) has plant ingredients to feed and protect the skin.

  • Annique Revitalising Cream (R190), for all ages and skin types, has three plant serums and rooibos-tea extract (a good antioxidant) to promote the skin’s production of collagen and elastin, as well as improve the skin’s ability to retain moisture.
